Quietening the Noise, Finding Stillness

Your retreat with us is now approaching and we are really looking forward to welcoming you to Symondsbury Manor.

If you have any queries that we haven’t covered on this FAQ page, please let us know and we will be able to help you.

Am I going to go crazy without coffee for a whole weekend?

With only a few weeks to go until you arrive, you may wish to start thinking about cleansing, ‘de-toxing’ before you arrive for three days of uber healthy, plant based food and drink. If you are a caffeine addict, two days without any, can give you a bit of a headache and lethargy so rather than tainting your time with us by not feeling great, it can help to cut down in advance. Here are some hints on giving up the coffee hit in preparation for your stay with us:

  • Try delaying that first hit when you wake up in the morning, take a warm glass of water with lemon instead or make a Green Smoothie with Kale, Spinach, Cucumber, Lemon & energising Spirulina as an energy boosting alternative.
  • Switch to decaffeinated  tea or coffee so you keep the psychological sense of having that comforting drink, but only buy organic because the chemical process of decaffeinating can leave toxic traces that are not good for you. Clipper make lovely organic decaf tea and coffee.
  • Cut down slowly to reduce the chance of headaches and other withdrawal symptoms, try dropping to two cups a day, one in the morning, one in the afternoon.
  • Drink lots of lots of water, add lemon too.
  • Breathe deeply and do some yoga flow to help the body shift the toxins.
  • Take Vitamin C to encourage the liver to naturally detoxify the body.
  • If you are able to visit a sauna or steam room this can also help to speed up the cleansing process.

It isn’t just caffeine, you might also like to cut down on alcohol, sugar and dairy before the retreat to make the most of the cleansing weekend.

What do I need to bring on a yoga retreat?

You won’t need a great deal to be comfortable for the weekend.

  • We provide yoga mats, blankets, cushions, belts and eye bags for relaxation. We don’t use blocks so if you wish to bring one please do.
  • Some of our mats are old and we don’t replace them too often because we try to keep our environmental footprint as low as possible. Please bring your own mat if you prefer to have one in excellent condition.
  • Wear loose comfortable clothing for yoga and warm socks, jumpers etc for meditation and relaxation.
  • Wet weather gear just in case and sturdy shoes for a ‘all-weather’ walk by the coast.
  • You might like to bring a dressing gown if you are sharing a bathroom for those night runs.
  • A hot water bottle if you like.
  • We will supply Faith in Nature Shampoo and Body Wash, please bring your own if you wish
  • We supply hand towels and one small bath towel each, you might want to bring another for your use.
  • The venue does not provide hairdryers, we will have one spare but please bring your own if possible.
  • Ear plugs are a great idea if you are a light sleeper.
  • Bring an inspiring spiritual book that you’ve been meaning to read for years, we will have a small library of our favourite life changing books for you too.
  • A notebook and pen to keep a journal of anything that comes up for you over the weekend.
  • Please bring cash to pay for your treatments, there are no card facilities at the retreat.

Will there be wifi?

We want to create a peaceful escape for all guests on this retreat so we won’t be encouraging use of phones or wifi. This weekend is a Digital Detox, we suggest handing your phone over when you arrive to beat temptation, leave it at home or keep it switched off.  This is a contact number for your friends and family to reach you in emergencies, call Peter Hitchin (the manors owner who lives next door) 07956 220974 or 01308 456288.

Is there a number we can call if we get lost and to give to family in case of emergencies?

Any problems finding us please call the numbers below, you can also hand out these numbers to family if you are concerned about having your phone off for a few days, it can help us relax if we know we can be contacted in an emergency. Call Peter Hitchin (the manors owner who lives next door) 07956 220974 or 01308 456288. You can also reach Saira before the retreat begins on Friday on 07809 141815 or 01258 880505.

How do we get to Symondsbury Manor?

Please let us know if you are coming by train so we can try to link you with other guests for taxi sharing from Crewkerne, Axminster or Dorchester South. You can find taxi numbers online.

For directions please follow this link www.symondsbury.com/map-and-directions to Symondsbury Manors own website where they have a google map that will show you exactly where they are.

When trying to find Symondsbury Manor please don’t get confused with Symondsbury Estate which is a different location.

These directions will help you once you are in Symondsbury Village:

Locate the church (easy as Symondsbury village is very small). To the immediate right of the church you will see open gates leading up a drive. This is the entrance to the Manor. At the end of this short drive (with large thatched barn on your right) park in front of the house. Walk along the front of the Manor, with the lawn on your left, past the red door and round a corner, straight ahead you will see some steps, the door above is your entrance to the manor.

Please take care along the path  round the house as the flagstones are very uneven. Lights should come on if you approach in the dark but a torch would be handy too!

What time shall we arrive and leave?

Please arrive at 4pm on Friday, we know how hard it is to plan an exact time of arrival if you are travelling a distance, but we would really appreciate it if you didn’t arrive early as other guests are leaving the manor on Friday and so we need time to get in and make sure everything is perfect for your arrival that afternoon.

The retreat will end at 6pm on Sunday after a last super chilled yoga to send you all home energised and relaxed. We understand some of you may wish to leave earlier if you have a long journey home, so if you need to leave please do so before the last yoga class at 4.45pm so we can all say goodbye to you properly!

Are there any treatment slots available?

Saira and Finola both have slots on Sunday afternoon. We are hoping to also offer informal head, hand or feet massages in the living space on Sunday afternoon, let us know if you are interested.  See the website for treatment options.
